My Friend

As we near the end of the year - the arbitrary period of time set upon us, it seems appropriate to look back and reflect on past events.

My time-machine did not take me to Jan 1st 2008. I shot way over to Dec 7th 2005.

Having just passed out from my communications course in the army, I was posted back to become an instructor. Since our course has ended and the next intake due beginning of the year, I was given a couple of days off and cleared my remaining leave.

I don't think anyone knows this but I skipped the overseas church camp claiming that I couldn't take leave from Dec 7th to 10th.
I spent 3 days in the hospital when Kelvin was warded after another surgery and then subsequently placed under observation.
I could have went for the church camp and got to know some people that I'd like to have known better.
Till this day I have no idea what made me stay in Singapore. I'd like to think I was being a friend, then again I'm not too sure. What I am sure of is that he was a friend from the moment we met at the basketball courts in 2001.

I still miss K a lot but the regrets come only at certain times. Like now.

This afternoon, I watched The Shawshank Redemption yet again for the umpteenth time. I was near tears when Red narrated his feelings when Andy broke out of prison.

I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

I guess, I just miss my friend.
